Type III Hard Anodization

MIL-A-8625, Type III (hardcoat):

Type III Anodization is sometimes referred to as “engineering hardcoat” or just “hardcoat.” Using lower bath temperatures and higher current than Type II Anodization, much harder coatings are created out of virtually the same bath concentrations.

Type III hard anodize is commonly applied to aluminum parts exposed to corrosive environments where extreme hardness and increased oxide thickness are advantageous. It is also beneficial in situations where exceptional abrasion resistance is necessary or improved electrical insulation is needed. Automotive, aerospace, military, electronics, sporting goods, and cookware are among its myriad of uses.

Benefits of Type III Anodization:

  • Significantly harder coating than Type II
  • Several times thicker coating (between .0015” and .003”) than Type II
  • Unmatched abrasion resistance for aluminum

Capabilities:

Part sizes are limited by tank size of 44”x32”x36”
